The Reading Project “Ciranda da Leitura”, another social project of Ipanema Coffees, began its activities this year. Its goal is to take knowledge to needy people for them to travel in the world of literature, promoting access to reading and contributing to making citizens gradually more critical of and participative in society. Many activities are organized, among which: reading circles and theater plays in needy communities. The factors that motivated this new project was the difficulty poor people have to acquire books because of their cost and the lack of reading habits in the community plus the fact that the existing libraries do not encourage reading. Instituto Ipanema de Desenvolvimento Social [Ipanema Institute for Social Development] is currently engaged in more than 10 social projects.
